Being one of these Twitterly-challenged individuals who just cannot seem to figure it out at all, I was intrigued by this post on E's Life in Progress blog, about a rather beautiful idea introduced by Alan (News from Nowhere).
Twitter for Gentlefolk, or Gentle Twitter celebrates the old concept of a postcard crossing the world and appearing solidly on your doorstep with a real handwritten message on it!
Having signed up as a willing participant with E, my first message duly 'tweeted' its way to Africa in leisurely fashion, taking about 3 weeks to travel all the way from Florida in the USA. Its colourful glossiness, jewel-like amidst the usual mass of brown envelopes definitely brightened up my day!
Now for the confession part. Being the master procrastinator that I am, I stuck the postcard up in the window so I could admire it for a while, and think about scanning it and writing this post. In a flash, two weeks seem to have passsed, and to my surprise, I've discovered that the harsh African sun blasting away at the back of my postcard has totally leached away the colour of the ink. E's words have all but vanished, only the indentations of her pen remain...
I have tried brass-rubbing type techniques, but to no avail. Luckily in good CSI fashion I can still read the imprints of E's engravings, although they cannot actually be seen on the following rather empty looking postcard back. Sorry, E!
Nonetheless, it was lovely to receive this message from her, accompanying an impressive Tampa cityscape, which, as she says, is certainly a far cry from my part of the world...
If anybody else would out there would like to join in, please do send me an email via my profile page with your snail mail address, and I would love to do some more tweeting by postcard! Any cards will be featured on my blog as part of Gentle Twitter.
Weekend greetings to all, from a very chilly Saturday in the Southern hemisphere!

hee hee, that is so funny. i love sending and recieving mail, through the post (i don't have fb or twitter accounts). i will send you a postcard karen, i think i have your correct address still?
xxx
What a great idea! i will have to get your real address and mail you a real postcard, as I don't have a twitter account.
Karen - Count me in. I have a twitter account but I use it more for keeping up with the causes I am interested in than keeping in touch. Nothing replaces a good ol' fashioned, tactile piece of mail -- especially if it's not a bill! I left you my address and I hope you will do the same. Have a great weekend. Lyn
I also do not have FB or twitter accounts but I am happy to send you a pc if you email me via my profile page. :-) Diane
Emailing you my address now!
Baci,
E xx
I am glad Alan's original idea is taking off in blogland...Sorry the ink faded so quickly. Let me know when you'd like another and thanks for yours in advance. Three weeks to reach you? Wow!
e, great idea!
I adore this idea!!!
OH this sounds fun count me in!
PS word ver: fries, bit like what the sun did to your card!
xx
I will happily send you a postcard if you let me have your address.
Have you looked at postcrossing.com it might appeal to you :)
I'd love to send you a postcard. This one made my day.
now where did my comment go? my sister is an avid pc poster and its always great to see where she is in the world - espec as we dont cross paths too often and she is a gypsy; so I'll play :)
Karen, this is a great idea and one similar to "Mail Away" that I am involved in with some other bloggers. "Mail Away" is a bit more cumbersome as it is mail art that is sent & the packets can get rather large & involved. I would love to join your "Gentle Twitter"; as you say it is so much fun getting real mail from afar. Some of our folks are from Australia, Wales, England and the U. S. It's a great way to see the world & various parts of one's own country.
Few things can beat a postage stamp, an envelope, and handwriting.
